Most of my home video stuff is on Hi8mm (Sony) ...how can I put it onto DVD? Will I have to buy a fast computer and capture them onto digital format ? Are there any DVD recorders that can accept the Hi8 tapes thru the red/yello/white plugs and put the input onto a DVD (I know its a lot to ask for ) or perhaps is there a service that does all of this? Can anyone suggest a way.

A PC with a decent analogue video capture card (such as Pinnacle DC30), or a PC with a firewire card and an external analogue-to-firewire video convertor, or a separates DVD recording unit will all do the trick.
If you've got around 350 you could think of investing in a stand-alone DVD recorder such as the Philips DVDR880
