locked iTunes store mp3

Anyone know how to unlock these?, my mate e mailed some tracks but they are only authorised to play or burn on his mac

Firstly, you will need iTunes to play them. It is available for Windows: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ . Also, when you buy music from iTunes (which is how i assume he got it), it wont be in mp3 format; iTunes uses AAC. And you are licenced to allow playback on up to 5 computers. All you will have to do is import them into the iTunes library, and choose Store -> Authorise Computer. Assuming all 5 'activations' have not been used, youll be able to play them.

Thanks mate, I have iTunes it came with my Mac, I import the tunes to mp3 not ACC on my iTunes, but I do understand ACC files. Because my friend bought the tunes with his account my Mac is not authorised to use them in any way, I have an iTunes account but obviously this does not help me in this situation. My friend will not really be up for giving me his password I would assume so that is why I was asking if there was anyway to unlock the files

A simple way is to burn them to cd then rip them back off again into whatever format you want, this will remove the protection.

Otherwise you can search the internet for software that will do this for you.

I should have said that your mate will have to do the above before emailing the tracks to you.

In future, tell your mate, and anyone else you know, not to buy DRM'd music, such as that from the iTunes Music Store.

This will sort you out,although I hope you are using it purely to evaluate the songs. The program is not to encourage piracy but to ensure that music you have purchased is freely movable between your pc's, mp3 players etc and not tying you down to just ipods.

I'm not being funny with you, I'm just giving you (and anyone else) some advise. Right now people have found ways of cracking it. While this will probably always exist, it's illegal, so you might as well just have downloaded the music from some P2P service.

The companies that sell DRM'd music are under no obligations to keep making software or devices that play it back. Take Microsoft's new Zune player for instance. It uses a completely different DRM system than the other Microsoft system used by everyone else but Apple, called PlaysForSure. Essentially Microsoft are pitting their Zune against all the other companies like Creative. When PlaysForSure dies (and it will do one day), only current devices that support it and current software will play your music back. If you buy a new player or upgrade your software, you may lose your music too.

DRM is pure evil, and the problems it's going to cause have yet to properly be seen.
