Crackling Tv

Hi i hope this is the right category!!

I have a Philips Television in my bedroom. I got it in 2001. This evening I switched it on and all i can hear is a strange crackling sound but no picture. I switched it off very quickly because it sounded like i was about top be electrocuted!!!
Can anyone help with what this might be?
I know its a bit vague but i would appreciate any answers.

Hi Wonderwoman1, first of all, do you look anything like her?

Your television could be a few things, it could be as simple as a bad solder joint, did it go all of a sudden or has it been playing up for a while?

Does it make a Ticking sound? i would want you turn it on again for any length of time as it might make matters worse.

If you know anyone might be worth getting them to take a look, but I would go for someone that you know or a recomendation and ask if they charge to look, I think a most people will charge to look and then take it off ht ebill if you go ahead.
Depends on what size it is, if its a small portable, might just be worth getting a new one.
I presume you don't have an extendede warentee on it?

Tube-type televisions have an EHT (Extra High Tension) transformer producing a very high voltage that's applied to the inside of the screen. It sounds like there is an insulation breakdown, and this voltage is arcing across somewhere inside the set. It might be just a case of physically moving a wire inside to fix it, or it may mean the transformer itself is faulty, (which does happen), and may need replacing. A TV repair man should only take a minute or two of inspection to advise you.

its a small tv so i might just buy another one...it seems in Edinburgh they feel it right to charge you 50 pounds for a call out just for looking at the thing!!!! lol
