Well there are a few issues here. First of all, you could use a program like mp3 gain, to increase the volume of your mp3s.

But, music players sold in the EU have to have a volume limit, by law. You can use a program called goPod to remove this on your iPod, maybe what your mate used. There's perhaps a similar program for Sony players: try googling 'sony remove volume limit' or something.
