unlocking phones

i am giving my old phone to a friend but it needs to be unlocked, without going to a market trader and paying more than the phone is worth, is there a way of downloading any software to do it, the phone is a nec, subscribed to 3

just had one done though not on 3. paid 0.99p on ebay and worked first time. have a look on ebay
