Internet connection

I had a problem with my computer which I sorted out - amongst other things at the time I could not get on the internet. Having sorted out the problems and installing a 2nd antivirus and spyware tool, the only thing wrong was that it took ages to connect to the internet. I have Broadband with NTL which is normally 2 seconds if that. I then noticed that an update from IE6 to IE7 had not worked so went on Microsoft site and upgraded to IE7 that way thinking it would solve the problem. Unfortunately it takes about four minutes to connect to the internet (which is ages - try it) so why is this. I have looked at everything I can thing of and cannot find a reason. HELP!!

I'm worried by the information in your post that you installed 'a 2nd antivirus'. I hope that doesn't mean that you've got two anti-virus programs running simultaneously. This a well-known recipe for disaster!

Anti-virus programs make changes to your registry. If you run two of them simultaneously, conflicts can occur which can cause unwelcome alterations to the registry. If you've got two such programs running, disable one of them and see if that improves matters. If it doesn't, you might need to consider an 'on-top' re-installation of Windows.

The previous poster is correct 2 antivirus programmes is madness - neither will be ableto work correctly and can afect internet connections
I uninstalled IE7 as it slowed don my fast PC noticably I use Mozilla Firefox browser for best browsing experience and safety online it ids years ahead if Internet Explorer 7 do a Google search and read the reviews you'll never look back!!

Thanks for all your help. I have since found I have Downloader.Zlob.aku on the computer and have now removed it and the internet is fine.
BUENCHICO: I only downloaded (and paid for!!) another antivirus programme because the first one which has worked well in the past did not find anything wrong on the computer. However I did wonder how you can tell the good antivirus programmes from each other as the one I downloaded was on the Microsoft site but I know think it was a scam of some sort just to get you to buy it. How can you tell?

There's probably no such thing as a perfect anti-virus program. The computer magazines sometimes run tests on them but the results seem to vary depending upon who is doing the tests.

From the paid-for products, Kaspersky is usually well-rated. Among the free products, AVG Free Edition is always highly rated. (It's almost certainly the most popular anti-virus software with the 'regulars' here in the Technology section of AB).

AVG Free Edition is what I have always used but unfortunately it missed the 'Downloader.Zlog.aku' - that's what got me worried. Anyway, fingers crossed now as at the moment everything is perfect. I also use AVG Anti spyware which also missed the problem hence the panic.
