I like to use Microsoft Word to arrange photographs on a page when I intend to print them, but I get the impression that Word is reducing the resolution / quality of the images. Am I imagining this?

Screen resolution is only 72 dots per inch, but print resolution is usually at least 300 dpi, which means that pics that look good on the screen look dodgy when printed out. Check the resolution of your original images in an image editor such as Photoshop.
