just bought a laptop what else will i need for it to be internet ready on broadband.

If you are going to use it by connecting to the modem by cable - just an ethernet cable, which you probably have already.

If you want to use it wirelessly - a router. Your laptop should be wifi enabled as it is.

What Ethel omitted to say, was that you need a modem. This can be either USB or Ethernet flavour for a wired connection. For a wireless connection to enable you to use the laptop anywhere in the house you will need a Modem/Router.
