TelecomPlus

I recently had a leaflet delivered that was advertising a 'pig' from TelecomPlus. It claims that it automatically sends your outgoing telephone calls through the cheapest route at any given time, and that it is totally free. How does it work? And what's the (inevitable) catch?

The system works by routing the calls to take advantage of spare network capacity that BT, Telewest or NTL have available. This spare capacity is bought by a company like Telecom plus who then sell it on at a cheaper rate. This isnt technically a scam but a lot of people further up the pyramid have made enough money to retire from their day jobs as they receive not only commission on the pigs but also on their customers telephone calls. Cheap Gas, Electric and Mobile calls are also available through this company.
There is no catch, I'm a user of telecomplus and would recommend them as I've saved hundreds by using their multi-service package - telephone, gas & electric. Don't let the pyramid selling venture refered to by the previous poster put you off. This is the way they recruit their distributors and has no bearing on the cost and service to you as a user. How they work is they get a fee for each new customer they recruit and then get paid an ongoing commission based on that new customers usage. If a distributor recuits another distributor they then get a much smaller commission of all the new distributors customers usage. They term this referal marketing, which is the same as pyramid selling as far the distributor recuitment is concerned. So how does this affect the end user? It doesn't you just get cheaper bills. After you sign up for their services, they then give you information about becoming a distributor yourself.
There are loads of these types of companies about. If people save money does it matter if those in the higher reaches of the food chain have made a few pennies?
It does seem that they are jack of all trades, they exist with a series of affiliates that allow them to offer a wide specturm of serviices. A company that I used to get cheaper electric and gas also sell Life Insurance as well as all the cheap telephone call stuff. I am sure that someone at http://www.searchandsave.com is making soe good money, and do you know what, good luck to them!
