i use winmx quite alot but find it takes quite some time to download anything. Im on a 56k set up can anyone give me some info on how i can speed things up abit, without using broadband.

There is a file easily available on WinMX called How to speed up WinMX (funnily enough) and also there are a number of sites you can try to show you how to alter the setting for maximum speed here are my fav's...

but ultimately you will be throttled back by only having 56k.

also it helps to have a big share folder; not good news for those starting out but having 1000+ mp3's in your sharefolder does make a dramatic difference i tried it once with a new folder with only 5 files in and the response was dog slow. Also if you want something popular, say, Britney Spears or something you will download it a lot quicker than if you want say, Matthew and Son by Cat Stevens.
