Recieving SMS messages

Is there a way to get your phone to check with the message centre to see if you have SMS messages waiting to be delievered? I sometimes get a situation where people have sent me messages while they are only a few feet away, both phone have network coverage but for some reason I don't recieve a message for anything up to 6 hours later

The SMS gateways are like any other mail server... they can get clogged up with mail.
