You need a better aerial!
I just had a new aerial fitted and the difference is amazing.

I had an old aerial (about 10 years old) that gave me reasonable pictures on analogue TV and Freeview.

But I just had a wide band aerial fitted (wide band is ideal for freeview) and now the picture is so clear and sharp.

I had no idea a proper wide band aerial could make the picture so much better.

The aerial was about 175 but it has made such a difference to the picture quality.

As rojash says, I suggest you get a new aerial.
The symptoms are indicative of a low signal level reaching your set. Do like Rojash and VHG suggest, though if you look in the Argos catalogue, you'll get a 'high gain' one for 30 to 40.
(VHG - 175??? I very nearly sprayed my computer screen with a mouthful of coffee!! I'll bet it works!!)).
