I'm no authority on art, but I've got a fair bit of experience when it comes to finding online databases etc , so I could make a couple of suggestions.

Undoubtedly, the best one is "Grove Art". It's probably the most comprehensive database available online and I think you'd be more than happy with it. The problem is that Grove Art is accessible by subscription only and it's not cheap. Having said that, It should be available in most college and university libraries if you're a student for free. I suppose some large public libraries may also have a subscription to the service.

The other one I could suggest possibly is "Xreferplus". This is a huge database containing hundreds of reference books online. Again this is normally a subscription service but the subscription cost reflects the number of books you're allowed to access - the more you pay, the more books are available. My university has access to all the art titles available. (fourteen) and there's lots of pictures of works of art and artists' biographies etc.
.

The good news is that you can sign up for a trial of Xreferplus even if you're not at uni. You've got nothing to lose - just type it into Google and see what you think.
