Can anyone explain to me why when you test-message somebody on a mobile-phone/cell-phone there is no charge: however, if you actually talk to that person there is a charge. In both cases you're using the companies equipment aren't you?

It's a text message, and you do pay for it in one way or another. Nothing is free.
Some deals include x amount of minutes talk time and y number of SMS messages in the price. As peanut says - nothing is free.

Ok, thanks people. So it's not free....it's just cheaper.
