Ipod click wheel started making clicky noise and sticking

I bought my Ipod mini just before the Nano came out. so its heading towards 2 years old I think. The click wheel has recently felt like its sticking when I press down on the play/forward/back button and making an audible clicking noise (not the click that you can hear through your headphones - one that people around me can hear)

Could I have got some grit/dirt lodged under it and if so can I clean it?

It may well be a bit of dirt yes.
