I am about to buy my first DVD player. I am not massively technical and I don't particuarly want the best 'state-of-the-art' model. I do want one, however, that plays and records on VHS as well as playing DVDs. What's the best-value one around? I'd like it cheap - but not cheap and nasty!

I would recommend the Cyberhome 528 which, while cheap (can be found for around 60), is very good quality, has 5.1 sound, can be made region free and can even get around Macrovision copy protection. However it is now an oldish model and may be hard to find. Richer sounds have the Cyberhome model 402 for 69.95 or the 505 for 99. These are probably similar in spec and all will play vcd/svcd and MP3 files as well. Try talking to a salesman in Richer sounds - they are helpful and know their stuff.
