I have a laptop running XP and am thinking of buying an external hard drive to run my itunes on with it. I am also thinking of buying a new laptop in the future with Vista on, will I be able to switch the external hard drive to the new laptop with itunes on it without any problems?

I don't think there will be any problem with reading the HDD with either operating system. The question might be - will itunes run on Vista?
You probably realise that it is best to have USB 2 connections on your old PC to improve the data transfer rate.
If your computer lists "Enhanced Host Controller" in Control Panel-System- Hardware- Device Manager-Universal Serial Bus Controllers then you have it otherwise you have USB 1.1 which is slower. A new laptop would be USB 2.
