Im trying to connect my tape player to my computer. I have connected my RCA plugs to the left and right of my tape player output, then plugged the other end of the cable to my line in on the computer sound card. I thought i would then get music through the computer speakers but all i have is silence. Also what software would you recommend to use to record and convert. Help!

You probably need to go into your advanced sound properties and check that "Line in" isn't muted/turned down.

Get Audacity and the LAME dll (both free) to do the recording/conversion.

check you are using the line out or pb out sockets on the tape deck.

also check you have plugged it into the line in socket on the pc, not mic.

I use nero wave editor (part of nero burning rom) to transfer stuff from records and tape.

be sure to keep your originals though if they're unique recordings- its easy to delete files by accident or the hard drive could crash. i also have cd-rs burned 7 years ago which have deteriorated beyond use, yet the cassettes still play fine! sometimes the old stuff is the best......
