my mum has an old mobile form the late 90's and it's about time she got a new one. Would it be best/cheapest to get a new pay as you go with a new sim or can you just get a phone a put the sim in? Would a sim card that old be compatible anyway?

If she's happy with the tarriff, keep the SIM. It will be compatible, but may need trimming down if it's the old size. Ebay is a great source of good quality used phones, but check that it's UNLOCKED, i.e. it will work with any SIM
Why is it time that she got a new one then? Apparently the older chunkier phones have become cool again (anythin' retro eh?) and if she's used to it and happy with it then why change it...I have a camera to take photos with thank you very much...I use a phone to call with not to do anything else.
sft42 - how old are you talking about. A friend of mine brought in his old motorola and it weighs a ton and does not fit in his pocket, looks like the old walky talky stuff. Surely nobody thinks it cool to walk round with one of those? Good phones though.
