Plastic hotel door keys

I read that there is so much confidential information stored on the key that it is recommended you trash them rather than return them to the front desk.
Any views on this?.

information like what? When you went into your room? I dont mind people knowing that do you?
Surely the front desk have all your information on their computer system should they wish to look at it? You could always give the front desk false details when you check in if you are worried. (If staying in the uk).

The Pasadena Police Dept. site (where this originated) and others found at www.snopes ......, is re-assuring the public that no credit card info is encoded on the hotel key cards.
