can i watch my videos and dvds in the usa?

moving to chicago and want to know if i need to take my videos and dvds with me. can i view them on their equipment. also will they still have video recorders out there if i have to buy a new one or a tv combi with video?

The TV and video system standard in the UK is PAL. In the US it's NTSC. They are not compatible. But some TV and video equipment will play both standards - the player or TV recognises which format is in use, and switches over so as to play the recording. Such equipment is certainly available in the US, just make sure before you buy.

Another thing to remember is that your DVDs may be 'Region Code 2' for the UK, and won't play on the US 'Region Code 1' DVD players unless you have one that is specifically set to 'Region 2' or is 'Region free'.
