I'm a novice in file types of computer. Many times I'm unable to open files as the computer asks for the corresponding programme to open it.I'm looking for a free software that will latch the related programme automatically to the file i've to open. Will anyone help me?

You really need to know the three letter extension to the file ie filename.xxx. The operating system makes the decision as to which installed applications open with what file extension (eg filename.doc opens with Word or filename.pdf opens with Adobe Acrobat). The problem is that by default Windows hides these file extensions. You can either make them visible (Right click "My Computer" then left click "explore" > Tools > folder options... > In the "View" tab ensure "Hide files extensions for known file" types is UNticked. Alternatively, right click the file in question > properties will tell you the entire the file.extension name. Tell us what the offending extension is and we will tell you what application you need to view it.
SHANKER: I've very rarely found that if I've got the appropriate programme that it doesn't launch automatically, so j2buttonsw's offer to I.D. the "unknown" file extensions is probably a better bet than a programme that scans your system for the relevant software (if such exists). The other option is to stick the extension into Google.
I've had a look on the net for you and you could try this link - http://www.pcselect.com/1pcselectezine/fileassocia
