Voip connection question...

I'm abandoning BT in favour of Virginmedia cable broadband and a Voip phone.
Now I want to get one of them there new fangled wireless Voip phones that Skype sell (I'll shop around), this will sound stupid, but, would such a phone need a PSTN line also? Or will it just plug in into the router?

Your Skype phone connects to your PC via the USB cable, with the Skype software you can call other Skype users for free, and at a reduced rate can call normal landlines or mobiles. You dont need a phone thou, a Microphone and headphones will do the job just as well !

My Skype phone plugs into my router, and works whether the pc is switched on or not. Of course the router and modem have to be switched on!

It is a dualphone. It can be plugged in to a normal telephone line to receive calls, but mine isn't.

I have a SkypeIn number so people can call me from their landline for the same price as calling a landline, and SkypeOut so I can call landlines.

Oh - and the dualphone part that plugs in to the router is in the loft (that's where my router is) and the base and phone are in my living room.

No problem using the phone anywhere in the house or garden.

I have been doing this with a mic and headset using Yahoo Messenger and MSN for the past eight years and chatting to people all over the world ...... you do not need anything else.

I too used a headset / mic combo for two or three years but as a replacement telephone it is limited - the pc has to be turned on.

It is inconvenient if anyone telephones whilst I am away from the pc and if anyone else wants to use it while I am working at the pc it is difficult - no privacy for the caller.

If the pc develops a fault I would be without a telephone until is was mended.

With my phone I have none of these problems.

Having computer, internet connection and headset is enough to have good VoIP service. You don't any installation or add some hardware to make VoIP calls. You can use softphone in VoIP service provider site to dial the numbers you want to call. Then all will go fine. You can check RingCentral for options that you may find suit you needs.

Somes requires PSTN and some requires modem.
