when i try formatting drive c: i get a message saying format not supported on drive c

If you try to format C: through windows it will fail as the operating system files are usually on C: and they are "locked". The usual way to format a drive is to boot from a floppy disk (or CD) containing the "format.exe" application which avoids the locking of files by windows.
