I have previously had Shareaza, and my friend showed my how to drag and drop files so as that i am not sharing them, becasue the act of sharing files in illegal or something like that. Shareaza is cr*p. And I want Limewire back. So without my friend here, i tried to download it and figure out a way to change the settings or seomthing so that i am not sharing the files again. BUT ...
I don't know how.
Does anyone know how to stop sharing files on Limewire??
I went on the FAQ on limewire.com and it came up with a question on how to share files, saying that limewire autmatically shares files!!
WOAHHH!! I am so confused!
HELP!
x
if you go to the library page, and half way down on the left, there is an " explore " button. click on this and there they are. thats what i do anyway.
ps............i didnt know if you moved them to another folder then they are no longer shared !!! thanks for that xx
You downloading the files in the first place is just as illegal as sharing them on. The only thing you're doing is stopping your upload bandwidth from being used to share with others.
In the limewire settings (I don't have it here), you can change it so that there is no bandwidth for uploading files.
The act of downloading copyrighted files without the permission of the copyright holder is also illegal (though most prosecutions have stressed the sharing/distribution angle).
If you are going to break the law, don't you feel that it is selfish not to share? If everyone did that then how would you be able to get your downloads in the first place?
If everybody did what you did, you couldnt download files files in the first place, share and share alike. Your breaking no law (At present) by sharing your files, your only breaking copyright laws if you make money out of the shared files, ie, if you put them on a CD and sell them ! (As there not yours to sell)
Whether you receive payment for it or not, it is still illegal to share copyrighted works without the permission of the copyright holder. In the UK it is currently illegal (though this is under review at last) to (say) copy a CD that you own to your iPod! (Of course, I don't think that anyone has ever brought a case against anyone for doing so).
Fo3nix wrote "You downloading the files in the first place is just as illegal as sharing them on". That's not strictly true. While both actions are definitely illegal, one action is more serious than the other:
Downloading copyrighted files (without the permission of the copyright holder) is normally only a civil offence (for which you can be sued but not fined or imprisoned). However, making files available for uploading is considered to be 'distribution'. As such it's both a civil offence (for which you can be sued) and a criminal offence (for which you can be fined or imprisoned).
Both Shareaza and Limewire connect into the same network (Gnutella) by default. So you probably won't notice that much difference between the results of the two programs. However, that network (like all peer-to-peer networks) depends upon its users sharing their files with others. If everybody did what you're trying to do, the network couldn't exist.
So you need to decide upon one of three courses of action:
(a) you could continue to use peer-to-peer programs but not share your files (thus committing a civil offence while showing total disregard both for the music industry and for fellow users of the p2p network) ;
(b) you could use the p2p software but share your files. (At least you'd be showing some respect for other users but you'd be committing both civil and criminal offences, while showing disregard towards the music industry) ; or (c) switch to using legal download sites. (You'd stay on the right side of the law but you'd have to pay for your downloads).
Ok. Thanks. Ill give it a try.
But on the moral side of things, people choose to share. If people didn't share files out of their own choice then no, i wouln't be able to download them. But they do. So i can. But i don't want to be THAT illegal.
Hmm Buenchico you're right, and I stand corrected.
Also note that all this illegal business is, as LeMarchand points out, for those materials that have a non-sharing license (more commercial stuff). If it's licensed under a creative commons or similar, then you can share it freely (even though it is still copyrighted).
