I was thinking of buying one of those large screen TVs but have not yet decided on the size to get ie 32, 37 or 42.
Does the increase in size mean that the definition is reduced or are there more pixels in larger sizes so that the same quality is still there?

pixels are smaller and there are more of them.
increase in size means that the quality of some standard definition programmes will be reduced
I think the recommendation is to generally not get a plasma screen (go for LCD) after a certain size. I also think it depends on the size of the room it's going in as to the screen size you should have - the closer you are and the bigger it is I think it's more likely to blur...I know it's not a very techno answer but I thought I'd try to help!
