Can someone explain why equity prices sometimes go down despite the fact that investors are buying the stock?

usually because there is more stock for sale than there are buyers. There will always be some buyers but for stock to rise the demand must exceed the supply.
When it comes down to it, every transaction involves a buy and a sell.
