Microsoft Word - correction marks

I've used Word for Windows on XP for some time now. For some inexplicable reason, the programme has started showing all corrections in red with a bubble giving an explanation of the correction.

I referred to the Help screen, turned off the function as instructed, saved the document and the all correction marks disappeared. However, when I re-open the document later, they always return. I can't seem to lose the damned things for good.

Does anyone know how to be rid of these unwelcome intrusions once and for all?
