My dad owns a normal sky digibox in the front room, however we want sky+ to go in the room..Could we buy a sky+ box off amazon for cheap and plug it in where the box is now?

yes you can, although you won't be able to rewind, record 2 programmes etc, which would make it a bit pointless. (unless you can run another wire yourself to the dish). When sky come they run another wire from your box to the dish which allows the 2 signal to be received, hence 2 channels to watch at the same time

Also, when we had an upgrade - they improved the dish too, the origonal had one feed the new one had quad feed instead.
