i`m thinking of buying my new `phone ``sim free``.
Does this mean i can buy it and put my old sinm card
in without changing my number?

yes, you are not restricted to a certain network, therefore you can use any sim card.
Yeah sim free phones work on any of the networks hope this info helps.
It depends on whether the new phone you are buying is unlocked to any network, check this before buying as if it is not unlocked you will not be able to use a different network sim in it.
You also have the option of buying a phone that doesn't have a sim card at all. For example, I recently bought a Krzr, and you can sync it to your computer, and blue-tooth over your contacts in a couple minutes.
