ipod through hi-fi

i have an ipod and i want to play it through my hifi, but when it is connected, i get very quiet music but no singing and a loud buzzing noise as i have to turn it up so loud. does anyone know if it is the cable, or ipod that is the problem. i have already tried it through my tv with the same cable but i get the same problem. the cable is also quite old

Your cable is faulty - I think.

You can buy a new cable for under �5 so it's worth a try. You've connected it all properly as far as I can tell, and as you can hear your ipod through your headphones, the ipod is fine, and as you are having problems with both tv and hifi, it has to be the cable.
