Why can't I use MSN Messenger anymore?

For some reason, I have been unable to use MSN Live Messenger for the past week. When I log in it says something about Microsoft encountering a fault, and kicks me out every time. Any ideas?

If you took your car to a garage and said "it does not work" with no other information, would you expect them to fix it ?

You have told us MSN does not work but given no other information so how can anyone be expected to help you?

What is the message you are getting ?

What release of Windows and of MSN ?

Have you changed anything on your computer in the last week like new hardware or software ?

Just a few clues may give us a fighting chance.

That was a bit inpolite...I have given all of the information I have. The reason I have asked on here is that I'm not particularly technically minded, and don't have a clue what information to provide. All the message says is "Windows Live Messenger has encoutered a problem as needs to close"...that is all. I do not know what versions they are, and I have no new software.

hi there, i have just signed in with no problem. to find out what version you are using, click on help at the top menu bar then on ' about messenger' you will find the version info in there.

maviscoull - I can't even get into Messenger to try that. I can't even sign in

Hi scoobysoo, have you tried un-installing it and then re-installing it?
You will need to go to 'Start'
click on 'control panel'
and then go to 'add or remove programs'
Find messenger and then remove it.
Then re-install it from their website.

Hi Wingnut - yes, I've tried that but it still doesn't work. I've also tried switching off my anti virus

Hmmm how strange! Sorry I couldn't help scooby :o(

I don't know what else to suggest except maybe to do a system restore to the day just before it stopped working.

Do you receive automatic updates? That could be why it isn't working?

Sign in using your msn details and then click on Windows Live Messenger, you can explain your problem here and hopefully they can get back to you with some advice of what to do.

Thanks Wingnut, I've given that a try. In the meantime, I've managed to install an older version, which seems to work, which will do for now. Thanks again
