Help needed please.. I have tried to defrag today and only got 45% through and got a message up to say I needed to Scan Disk on a 'thorough' programme. I understand all that but when I try to do the scan I get a window saying 'Scan disc has now restarted 10 times because windows or another programme has been writing to the drive. Quitting some running programmes may enable Scan Disk to finish sooner', to my knowledge there are no other programmes running, the only thing I can think of is the AGV anti virus which I believe runs in the background all the time. Could someone tell me if this might be my problem and if not could you give me another solution. I bet this is a really easy peasy problem to solve ......but not for me!! Thanks Trudi

If you start your PC in 'Safe' mode, it should get rid of the restarting problem. To start in 'Safe', hold down the f5 key while the PC is starting up (or look in the PC's help files to see if there is another way to do it on your PC).
Hi Trudi: You're probably right on 2 counts. It's relatively simple & it's most likely the software that you have running in the background. Holding down the Control, Alt & Del(ete) buttons all at the same time will show what programmes are running. I suggest shutting all of them down except Scan Disk. This should allow the scan disk to complete. The defrag will not work until the scan disk is done. Hope this helps.
