Reading .wps files in Word 2002
6 Answers
My daughter has sent me a .wps file which I cannot read properly in Word 2002.
I know it's a Works file (version unknown) and I installed the converter file wp6rtf.exe as suggested by various websites, but it still won't open correctly. There is a small picture embedded in the text and this will not display; I get error messages stating "there is not enough memory or disk space to display or print the picture". I have 2Gb memory and 250Gb of free disk space.
I also get error messages about missing files. When the converter was installing, there was a warning message that some of the files it wanted to replace were more recent than the installing ones, so I answered 'No to All' to that. Was this correct?
Any ideas what to try next, please.

If it is not of a personal nature you can email to me for conversion, and I will send it back in a .doc format.

Use OpenOffice. Not only is it a Microsoft Office replacement (better, and free), but it also opens Microsoft Works files.

if she's using works ... it's worth the effort for future use

Thanks for your answers...
Ethel - The link goes to a page which says the download is unavailable. My file is only a 'birthday card' with an embedded picture, so it's not worth you wasting time trying to convert it; but thanks for the offer.
ACtheTROLL - That's the converter I downloaded (wp6rtf.exe) which doesn't convert the document properly.
I'll try to find out which version of Works she uses, but it might be simpler to just ask her to email me the picture seperately.

the best layed plans!!!
the other option is to
get her to send in PDF - works in any platform.
she might find it useful in the future

She uses Works 8.
The picture in the file won't open on my PC because "the object was created in Microsoft Works Imaging Server", which, of course, is not installed on my PC because I don't have Works!
So it looks like the converter is of limited use. It seems like it's OK for ordinary and formatted text produced by Works, but anything more fancy, such as a created object, is not supported.
