You recently said that reducing the size of photos with Irfanview was a breeze. Would you mind taking me through it, becuse I've tried its 'resize/resample' menu, and while it changes the size of the photo on the sreen, I can't get it to save it in the reduced format.

In case Cetti doesn't see this...

You gotto save the reduced image after resizing. If you want to retain the original save the smaller one with an identical name with a 'b' added to it. (file/save as)
Thanks to Cetti's great advice have done this many times in the past couple of hours, use the resize/resample option - I just click on "Half" it shrinks the image on screen, then just use "File" "Save As", then type in your new file name - it really works and am thrilled to bits!!! (which is exactly as wildwood said - but am proving I've used an answerbankers advice!!)
Phew - am I glad katiesara, as recommending a product can be fraught with problems because what suits one person may be a nightmare for someone else!

I was fairly confident with IrfanView as it's so widely used, but still good to know you're happy. Thanks wildwood for your help :-)

Thanks everyone. It's so obvious, once you know!
Apologies if you already know this sylvday but another thing I had to learn the hard way was - try to keep your Output Resolution 150 to 600 dpi maximum as this will also send your file size sky high. I tend to stick to 600 dpi for a good clear colour image and select Resize/Resample as near 800x600 as possible.
