A backward 'P' has suddenly appeared in Word after each paragraph, it is so long since I have seen one of these, I can't remember how to get rid of it. Help please !

Sounds like you have non-printing characters visible.

Press the "backwards P" on the toolbar, or if it's not there go to Tools>Options>View and remove any "formatting marks" checked boxes.
