recording bbc3 and 4

I cannot record BBC3 or 4 on my Sony DVD recorder, if i try it just records BBC1, what am I doing wrong. Thanks for any help.

You've not said where you're taking the Freeview signal from. Unless your DVD recorder has got a Freeview tuner built into it, I assume that you're feeding the signal from a Freeview box or from a TV with integral Freeview. In either case you need to ensure that your DVD recorder is set to record 'AV' and not any numbered channel. Then ensure that the Freeview box (or TV with Freeview) is switched to the required channel (and leave it switched on!)

If your DVD recorder hasn't got its own Freeview tuner, you'll only be able to record the programme you're watching. You won't be able to record one Freeview programme while watching another, because that requires two digital tuners.

This confuses a lot of people.

Normally when you record a TV program on your video or DVD recorder you are actually recording it from the TV tuner BUILT-IN to the video or DVD recorder.

So you set the video or DVD recorder on 1 to record BBC1, 2 to record BBC 2 etc.

So you are NOT recording from the signal on your TV but the signal being picked up by the TV in your your video or DVD box.

As Buenchico says, if your DVD recorder has a DIGITAL tuner (Freeview) built in then you can record to DVD from that.

But if it DOES NOT have a DIGITAL tuner it will probably only have an ANALOGUE tuner, so can only record the 5 "main" channels.

To record the other DIGITAL channels like BBC3 or BBC4 you need to connect the digital source (Sky box, Freeview box or whatever) to your DVD recorder via a Scart lead.

THEN THE IMPORTANT THING.

You need to switch your DVD recorder so it is recording whatever is coming in via that scart lead.

The actual setting can vary between DVD recorders but it will be something like AV1 or EXT1. To record from a second scart lead you set it to AV2 or EXT2.

Once it is set to AV1 or EXT1 then the DVD recorder will record whatever signal is coming via the scart lead plugged into Scart socket 1.

My set up is Sky+ box via Scart to DVD recorder, then DVD recorder via Scart to TV. If I want to record what is coming in via the Sky box I have to set the DVD recorder to AV1.

One other thing - The big digital switch over.

A lot of people have video recorders and DVD recorders with built in ANALOGUE TV tuners.

What many people dont realise is that when the big digital switch over happens those ANALOGUE tuners WILL NOT WORK ANY MORE.

So in your example, you say that when you record you get BBC1.

After the big digital switch over you would get NOTHING, there would be no analouge signal to pick up.

For people in that situation, the only way to get round it is to get a Freeview or Sky or Cable box and plug it in via Scart to the Video or DVD and record like that.

Which in fact is what we have suggested to you.

Can you imagine the THOUSANDS of questions we will get on answerbank when the big digital switch over starts happening.

In fact the first digital switch over is in less than TWO weeks, in Whitahven in Cumbria
