Any one know the latest digital cameras?
5 Answers
I want to buy my daughter a digital camera for xmas. I want to spend up to 130 on one. Preferably one thats quite new out, and is of a good quality. There are just so many to choose from i havent got a clue where to begin so i thought i'd ask on here first.
Does anyone know of any websites i can look at to find a good deal, or does anyone know any good deals out there at the moment.
Thanks
Isobel

You say you want a new model, but you pay top prices for the new models.
Digital camera models move on so fast that shops often sell off digital cameras that are 6 months old for a lot less.
For example I bought a digital camera the other day that came out earlier this year at about 250. Because they are replacing it with a new model shops were selling it at about 170.
But Curry's had a 10% off weekend recently and I got it for a little over 150.
So a camera that was 250 back in May I got it for 150.
Although the technology does move on a camera six months old is still an excellent camera.
And of course, buying a new model means you may be buying one with problems, whereas a camera 6 months old will have most of the problems ironed out.

Important points:
get one with a rechargable (lithium probably) battery, not one that takes AA's.
get one with proper optical zoom. ignore any mention about digital zoom
megapixels aren't that important. get one with 4 or above.
any canon will be a good buy. most nikons too. many fuji and casio cameras.
since it's your daughter, the looks and size will be very important. the smaller and lighter the better, obviously, so my suggestion would be to go to jessops or similar where they have a range, and check out the small units that match my suggestions above (and everyone else will say roughly the same).

to follow on from VHGs advice .... to save even more ...look round the house ... somewhere you will find an old shoe box (it's a law of nature!!) .... walk accross the carpet in bare feet to locate a pin (another universal constant!)
push pin into box ... and hey presto! ... a cheap camera.
the thing with this type of technology is it's changeing at a fearful rate .... above 6Mp or so a compact just can't produce results worth the extra price (and they eat memory)
so don't get too carried away
on the bright side ... the latest cameras have far lower power needs that earlier models ... and tend to be smaller and/or lighter (a real handbag facility)
September Computer shopper
recommended the following cameras - all under 100
In the order they ranked
best
Fuji Finepix f20 - 99
best budget
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS60 - 85
also 5 star
Sony cyber shot DSC-W35 - 109
4 star
Canon Powershot A550 - 102
Nikon Coolpix L10 66
but there are soooooo many
stick with "known" makes ....
stay away from digital zoom
built in rechargeable batteries sound like a good idea until they go flat. even the most out of the way village shop will stock aa and aaa batteries
even better
nip down to supermarket and look at the "what camera" - or "digital photograper" ..... see what they recommend .... they know .... we just guess based on not much evidence
buy online by all means - but if possible get jessops or similar to demonstrate and show some results
