I am having trouble setting up my DSL. Just can't get it to work. Could it be because I am using a USB hub instead of plugging the USB cable directly into the back of the computer?

Not sure what you mean.

You'd normally connect your broadband connection, using a DSL cable, into a router. The router would have Ethernet and USB ports which should allow you to connect one or more computers tor the internet via the router.

Who's your ISP and what equipment do they provide?

Hi, plowter. They sent me a modem, a USB cable, an Ethernet cable, and power supply for the modem. I have an old computer, so it does not have an Ethernet port. I plugged the telephone line and the power supply into the modem, and, since all USB ports in the back of my computer are in use, I connected the USB cable from the modem to a hub. I get a message on screen saying "Missing adapter name, Please select one from list". There is a drop-down menu, but there's nothing to choose from!...........Maybe I'll stay with dial-up:)
usb 1 or 2?
usb1 + a hub isn't a good idea 'cause you're sharing 12 Mb

My first reaction is .... it's time to upgrade your PC ..... in this case it will cost you the grand sum of 3.99
(which windows? - 95/98 could possibly need drivers ... so make sure) 2000, xp no problem

that way you have a dedicated connection

Thank you, plowter and AC, for your responses. I have Windows Me, and the computer is 7 years old........Time for a new one? I agree. Thanks again for answering.
Check the minimum specs for your ISP and your modem.

I'd guess that your computer can't recognise the modem so expects you to provide a driver. Is there a CD with the modem? Is there a Windows ME driver?

As ACtheTROLL says it's maybe time to treat yourself to a brand new PC.
Heyyyy

no the upgrade I referred to is to fit a network card
3.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

your only concern is drivers ... make sure before you buy that they are included for your OS (cheaper ones sometimes aren't)

for a surf machine it's good enough

take your time look online then get a new machine when you are ready
