burn the disc then finalize on your pc with a dvd writer and nero or suchlike?

From "finalise" is presume it is a DVD-RW recorder. Have you perhaps loaded a DVD+RW disc in it? If it handles both types -RW and +RW then +RW discs are much simpler and you don't have to finalise them.

If it has both a Hard Disk Drive and a DVD Drive ensure that the DVD option is selected not HDD perhaps ?
