I have just spent some time writing up an answer to a question which meant I had to check up some things in a book etc. Then when I tried to post it, I got the msg I needed to log in but I was already logged in. I have also lost the text I typed. Is it malfunctioning?

No best answer has yet been selected by vittoria. Once a best answer has been selected, it will be shown here.
For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Copying, as suggested above, is certainly a good idea for any answer which is long in itself or takes a long time to sort out. However, if you 'lose' an answer, as you describe above, click anywhere on the grey surrounds of the page with the message: 'log in to perform this action' (or words to that effect). You should then be offered a menu with the word 'Back' at the top. Clicking on that word should miraculously bring your answer back. Then save it, before doing anything else!
It is infuriating when this happens - especially being asked to log in when the top of the page specifically has a message welcoming you aboard, as it were! But you should be able to get around it by using the process above. Good luck.
