Canon MP500 cartridges

Okay, last question was a bit hasty, since I hadn't read the instructions... said to remove the chip from the empty cartridge and slot into the space on the new one. No wonder it didn't light up, it does now, but still won't print black - if I got a duff cartridge the first time, does that mean there's something wrong with the chip and I need to buy a new official cartridge with a chip to make them work?

Thanks for being so patient with all this - I must admit, I'm at the end of my blooming tether!!
