CD track idetification

The tracks are named on a CD player (such as Real Player) when on line. How can I identify tracks in printable form if I put a self compiled CD in.

I could be wrong, but I think the databases that such programs "look up" the CDs on will only give you matches for existing commercial CDs. If you use Roxio's burning software (I assume that other companies have a similar function, but I don't know for sure), their "cover creator" software will automatically name tracks according to the file name.

I don't think that you can easily do this with a compilation of your own. With mp3's on my hard drive, Windows Media Player often identifies which album they're from - presumably by reading the "id3" tag and searching online for a match for the Artist, Song etc.

With an audio CD - this information would be missing and, as mentioned, the online database which feeds info to your Real Player seems to only cover commercial releases. Someone has to program this info in to the database and no-one would ever have done this with your compilation.

This leads to the question : "if you were to query the cddb database & find no match could you then submit the track info so that others would see the info you're looking for?"
One program I use (ExactAudioCopy) has an option to submit info to this database.

I have compiled CDs of the odd decent tracks from newspaper freebies. The tracks / artists get listed before you burn them on to cd then unfortunately they disappear. Shame that the software doesn't give an option to print them off at that stage.
