I am trying to install my wireless g router but seem to have fallen at the first hurdle! I understand what i have to do but can\t connect the modem to the router because it doesn't have the right connector. My modem is connected to a USB port but the router connection is a different shape etc. Am I being a bit thick here or do I need to buy a different cable

The router does not connect to the modem, it either connects to a network port or a USB port. The modem in the computer is not used.
I have Virgin broadband which uses a Virgin broadband 'modem' connected to the router by ethernet.

The pc is connected to the router by ethernet as well.

thank yuo for responding so quickly, I suspected that it was my misunderstanding. If you have a moment would you mind confiming if I am doing the right thing.

i have virgin broadband modem with internet and ethernet ports. I have the router which came with one cable. I phoned the belkin helpline and was advised to disconnect the cable that leads from the modem to the pc and connect it to the modem port on the back of the router. Then connect (with the provided cable) the router to the pc. Is that correct? Thanks Jx
Are you on ADSL, that is, through your phone line from Tiscali or someone like that?

If so, you need a modem+router in one, not separate units (for exactly your reason).
No - you have been misled by the helpline.

1. Disconnect the cable that goes from pc to modem at the modem end.

2. Connect the modem to router by cable.

3. Connect the original pc cable to modem.

So you now have 1 cable from modem to router.
1 cable from pc to router.
My point 3 is wrong, sorry.

Connect the original pc cable to ROUTER, not modem.
You connect your wireless router to the cable modem (supplied by virgin)

You then connect your pc to the wireless router (either through the lan port or usb as previously stated)

You will need to run the set up disk provided by belkin for the wireless router which is quite easy to follow.

This is how my cable setup is linked
