Hi, Can anyone figure out what the problem can be of a dial up connection continuely disconnecting, I mean every minute! The phone line is only used for the computer so its not incoming calls etc... The phone line has been checked and is fine. My computer used to be fine using this line but the past month or so the drop off is now constant and to the point where its so frustrating I can't use it. Could it be the modem? Its a Gateway PC bought in 2000. Thanks!

I've had this recently. Norton showed no viruses, Spybot & Ad-Aware showed nothing wrong. But when I went onto www.trend.com & used House Doctor (on-line virus checker) it found 6 viruses, including Dyfuca. The dilemma, of course, is how to stay on line long enough to get it checked! Fortunately I have broadband at work, so did mine there
I've got the same problem too. Using BT Anytime. It's really flaky now and I get bumped offline constantly and I agree, it's a real pain. I'm on a Mac with anti-virus and an excellent firewall so can probably discount the likelihood of viruses. I wonder if over subscription to the servers now that the Internet is so popular. I've noticed too that the speed of connection I get is really slow, sometimes down to 14k. I'll be watching the answers to your question like a hawk!!
I don't know if it's the case here (probably not) but every now and then I accidentally change my Outlook Express settings to hang the line up when all accounts have been checked - it never failed to have me scratching my head!
try a new modem. then get bt to check line quality if it keeps failing. Finally upgrade all drivers. If this fails, try dropping modem speed. If that fails, try another phone line or buy ADSL.
