If you buy a HDDVD player can you watch standard dvds on it? AS far as I'm aware you can't play blu ray and HDDVD on the same player so I don't see the point of getting a blu ray player to render my dvd collection obsolete.

Hold your horses. A dual blu-ray/hd player is about to be launched, and yes, it will play standard dvds

You can play normal DVDs on a Blu Ray player.

I would also NOT think about getting a HD DVD player.

This format is struggling for survival and some film studios have already said they will no longer make movies on HD-DVD. Shops like Woolworths (and others) have already said they will stop stocking HD-DVD

I am not saying HD-DVD is dead but it may be worth keeping your money in your pocket until it is sorted out.
Another point. Blu-ray is currently at version 1.0 (I believe, early anyway).

Later this year they're going to add more features to the standard, and make discs under blu-ray 2.0. Most players sold today can't be upgraded to the new standard.

Nice, huh?

(I think the PS3 is the exception.)
