I think Norton Desktop for Windows is NDW.EXE which is a legitimate Symantec file...
Go into 'Search' in the Start menu, type in a search for NDW.EXE and make it look on your hard drive(s). When the result is displayed (it should find an instance of NDW.EXE), right click the file and hit 'Properties'. The location of the file on your hard drive and the contents of the 'Summary' tab (the 'Summary' tab will only show if the file is encoded with one) should tell you what it is, and what it's doing on your system.

further to Lokis answer, i get the following when following advive, ndw.exe.08bfc563.pf location c\windowss prefetch, is this ok?
It may be that Norton Desktop has an executable by that name, but being as I've never installed Norton Utilities, nor do I think Symantec installs Norton Desktop to the %SystemRoot%\system32 directory. I had same executable asking for access to the Internet. I've since stopped the exe from launching, but would still like to know what it may have been.
