Transferring home video to computer

Hi, I have an old type (non-digital) camcorder with small casettes (I think they are called Hi-8). Does anyone know how I can transfer what is on the tapes onto a CD/DVD - I have a Advent Media Centre PC with all the connectors on it but don't know how to do it or what software I need. Any suggestions on this subject very much appreciated.

I have the same type of camera and all I did was connect the camera to my DVD recorder, press play on the camera and record on the DVD. Converts without a problem. As I write this I am recording my 6 year old granddaughters birthday party. And tomorrow I will convert to disc using this method.

Thanks for your answer Cowboy - I don't have a DVD recorder other than that on my PC and I don't know where to plug my camcorder in to do it and whether I need specific software or not - but I will have a fiddle with it and see what happens - I was sure it could be done.

On my Camcorder I connect the white and yellow AV cables to the same on my DVD recorder. Sorry I cant be more helpful and I hope you find a way to solve your problem.

What you need is something like this from Dazzle, costs from �35 to �70, but you may find them cheaper online.

Last time I looked they sell thses kinds of devices on Amazon as well as in PC World, Dixons Currys etc. It usually plugs nto a spare usb port on the PC and will digitise any analogue video source such as Hi8 or VHS. Comes with software to help edit or trim your videos before committing to DVD. The video files created can be very large so make sure you have plenty of GBs available on your hard drive before starting.

Hi old_oak66, there are many devices (as suggested above) but here is a great device with almost any input (including analogue and DV), several ouputs, and even a digital tuner - all for �23.99 (cancelled export or bankrupt stock). Snapit up before they disappear? They also have avery cheap DVD recorder.

Thank you Wideboy - I think it would be easy to get a DVD recorder, seeing as they are so cheap!
