I'm getting a repeating pop-up search bar called British Web Search - not every time I do everything, but periodically, every few days for several weeks. I've run Spybot several times to no effect, and Norton scans clean for viruses and Trojans. I've also had a (careful) look in the Windows 98 Registry, but I can't see anything with similar names or unusual appearance. Does anyone know how to remove this pop-up once and for all, please...?

have you tried doing a file search for anything resembleing this and deleteing anything you find? Also, try Ad-Aware, a free download from Lavasoft, its a very effective spywear remover.
SpySweeper is an excellent tool for this kind of thing. It can be downloaded free from Webroot! It cleared out a homepage hijacker for me and often finds other stuff. Good Luck.
Sounds a bit like cool web search. Try running CWShredder. Its available as a free download. Just do a search for it.
