If you lose your PC or have to replace it you would lose iTunes? Then the only place with all your music will be the iPod itself? Can a new iTunes on a new PC retrieve this or would it sync to "Empty" and everything be lost? How can you back up your music so this doesnt happen?

iTunes itself doesn't like moving music from iPod to iTunes (only the other way).

However, plenty of other apps can do this for you -- Yamipod and Senuti being two that work well. Use these to copy music from iPod to your desktop, then just drag the music into a new iTunes library as usual to add them.

Then you can delete files from the desktop and dock the iPod.

Since the library is a new one, and the sync mechanism isn't that smart, it'll probably sync every single song, even though it's just copying everything.

Is this software (Yamipod, Senuti) that you would have to purchase?
No they're both free :) Google them and download. Senuti is Mac-only I think, but Yamipod is for Windows too.
